Imran Khan calls for more Pakistan flood aid during flying visit to Streetly

Sep 14 2010 by Chris Henwood, Birmingham Mail

In a flying visit to the West Midlands yesterday, he praised the British public for giving the Disasters Emergency Committee (DEC) around £40 million to help his country.

But, speaking to the Birmingham Mail, he reissued a plea for more aid as the United Nation (UN) prepares to relaunch the appeal campaign on Friday. Around two-thirds of the £298 million asked for by the UN at the start of August has been raised.

The fund-raising campaign has broken all records back in Pakistan and the British public has also done a tremendous job theyre always very generous, he said.

But so far, my own campaigning hasnt really targeted the British public and its a huge crisis with around 21 million people affected and 2,000 people killed, so obviously we would like to be doing a lot more.

A scrum of West Midlands businessmen and women greeted the sportsman-turned-politician as he arrived at a fundraising dinner in Streetly, Sutton Coldfield.

And, after the event, Mr Khan also backed the decision of the Metropolitan Police to allow the three Pakistan cricketers at the centre of the match-fixing storm to be allowed to return to their homes.

Its an ongoing investigation involving the International Cricket Council and authorities here and also in Pakistan, so its right they were released while the allegations are looked at, said the 57-year-old.

And, until the results are known, its not helpful to speculate on possible punishments or indeed whether theyre guilty of anything at all.

Mr Khans visit to the Midlands was organised by property developer Sam Ahmed, who got to know Mr Khan through his fundraising for a Pakistan hospital.

Mr Ahmed wowed Mr Khan with his Boundary Court regeneration project in Streetly, where the fund raising dinner was held at the Indian Nights restaurant.
