He has promised to develop welfare, healthcare and trade in Punjab and has done so in office.
He entered politics in 2002 as a member of the Pakistan Muslim League (Q), and was elected from PP-148 (Lahore-XII) in the 2002 Punjab election. Upon his election, he was inducted as Provincial Minister of Punjab for Tourism for Punjab into the provincial cabinet of Chaudhary Parvez Elahi's administration. He served in Parvez Elahi's cabinet until 2007, before joining PTI in 2013. He campaigned with PTI in the 2013 election and was one of 3 PTI members elected to the Punjab Assembly from Lahore after winning his seat, PP-148 (Lahore-XII). He won his seat PP-151 (Lahore-VIII) again in 2018 and served as Provincial Minister of Punjab for Industries, Commerce and Investment for Punjab under the PTI government from 2018 to 2022. He also took the additional portfolio of Provincial Minister of Information & Culture in 2019 after his nomination by the PTI government. He has been consecutively serving as a member of the Punjab Assembly since 2002.
He served as the Senior Minister for Punjab in Parvez Elahi's PTI-backed government from late 2022 to early 2023. He was chosen by Imran Khan to be the candidate for the Chief Minister of Punjab in the 2024 elections. He won his seat in the 2024 Punjab election, his victory was despite immense rigging, blackmailing, crackdown and threats to him to leave PTI. Despite this, he has stayed with PTI but has been constantly threatened and has had baseless cases thrown on him to get him to leave the Punjab Assembly. The PTI won enough seats in Punjab to form a government, but several seats were unconstitionally stolen due to rigging by the PML-N. If it was not for this rigging, Aslam Iqbal would be Chief Minister of Punjab as he was chosen by Imran Khan for the post. He remains under threat and crackdown, while even being arrested before the Punjab Assembly oath-taking, due to this he is not able to be Leader of Opposition in the Punjab Assembly.
