Before the Arab spring protests, Egypt was bent towards the US and depended heavily on the US for economic and diplomatic backing as well as military aid. Once enjoying dominant position among Arab countries, Egypt lost that position thanks to giving in to Americans’ demands and compromising its ties with Israel and Iran. However, things changed for positive ever since the autocratic regime of Hosni Mubarak was toppled. The new democratically elected president, Mohammed Mursi, surprised many by plumping for China in his first overseas trip outside Africa and Middle East since holding office two months ago. Mohammed Mursi also became the first president to visit Iran since relations were severed in 1979. What is surprising is his deliberate and courageous prioritizing of countries and governments in his foreign policy landscape. It serves a good lesson for the party in power in Pakistan and the future presidential hopefuls. Pakistan must walk away from overly-dependent US foreign policy and make its independent decisions on foreign policy. The European and American economies are already in the doldrums and we need to understand that. Pakistan needs to think and start afresh and this is possible only through opting for a balanced foreign policy.
